How to Get a Marriage License in Denton County, TX: Courthouse Guide

How to get a Denton County, Texas marriage license: where to apply, what to bring, the typical fee range, the 72-hour wait, and the 90-day window to marry.

Start with the county clerk

In Texas, marriage licenses are issued by county clerks, not by cities. For you, that means the Denton County Clerk. Denton is the county seat. The county also includes cities such as Lewisville and Flower Mound, but the license comes from the county, not from any city hall.

You also have more freedom than you might expect. You can apply at any county clerk's office in Texas, and the license is valid statewide. There is no residency requirement. You do not have to live in Denton County to apply here, and a license issued here can be used for a ceremony anywhere in the state.

Who has to show up and what to bring

Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you needs a valid photo ID. Pick a day when you can both get to the clerk's office at the same time, because one of you going alone is not the normal route.

Before you make the trip, ask the office whether you need anything beyond photo ID for your situation. It is a short question and it can save you a second visit.

What it costs

Each county sets its own fee, and it is typically about $70 to $85. We do not have the exact Denton County figure, so confirm it with the clerk before you go.

There is one way to bring the cost down. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you plan to take the course, finish it before you apply and bring the certificate with you.

The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window

Two timing rules shape your plan:

•The 72-hour wait. There must be 72 hours between the moment the license is issued and your ceremony. Do not pick up the license the morning of the wedding.

•The 90-day limit. The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. If you have not married by then, it expires and you would need to apply again.

The waiting period is waived in three cases:

•One of you is on active-duty military.

•A judge gives you a written waiver.

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

If none of those apply, a workable plan is to get the license at least three days before the ceremony and no more than 90 days before it. If you are using a course certificate, the wait goes away, but the 90-day limit still applies.

Confirm these details before you go

This guide does not include the Denton County Clerk's street address, phone number, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods, or exact fee. We do not have verified information on those, so do not rely on anyone's guess, including ours. Contact the clerk's office directly and ask:

•Where do we go to apply, and when can we come in?

•Do we need an appointment, or can we walk in?

•What is the exact fee, and which payment methods do you accept?

•Besides photo ID for both of us, is there anything else we should bring?

•If we have a Twogether in Texas certificate, how should we present it?

Write the answers down, then work backward from your ceremony date. Count at least 72 hours before it unless one of the waivers applies, and make sure the date falls within 90 days of the day you plan to apply. With both of you present, your IDs in hand, and the fee confirmed, the visit itself should be straightforward.
