How to Get a Marriage License in Sugar Land (Fort Bend County, TX)

Getting a marriage license in Fort Bend County: the county clerk issues it, the 72-hour wait, the 90-day validity window, and what to confirm before you go.

If you searched for a Sugar Land marriage license, the first thing to know is that no city issues them. Marriage licenses in Texas are issued by county clerks. Sugar Land is the largest city in Fort Bend County, but the county seat is Richmond, so the county clerk is the office you are dealing with, not a city hall.

Who issues the license

The Fort Bend County clerk issues marriage licenses for the county. Whether you live in Sugar Land, Missouri City, Rosenberg or anywhere else, the process is the same.

You also have more freedom than you might expect. You may apply at any county clerk in Texas, the license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. If another county's office is closer to your work or easier to reach, you can use it. The license will still work for a ceremony in Fort Bend County.

What to bring and who has to be there

Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you should bring valid photo ID. Plan your schedule so that you can both go at the same time. Do not assume one of you can handle it alone.

The fee

Each county sets its own fee. It is typically about $70 to $85, but we cannot tell you the exact amount for Fort Bend County. Confirm it with the clerk before you go.

There is a way to lower it. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. The same certificate also waives the 72-hour wait, which matters if your timeline is tight.

The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window

Two clocks start when the license is issued.

•72-hour wait. There must be 72 hours between issuance and the ceremony. You cannot get the license in the morning and marry that afternoon unless you qualify for a waiver.

•90-day validity. The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. If the ceremony has not happened by then, it expires.

The wait can be waived in three situations:

1.One of you is on active-duty military.

2.You have a judge's written waiver.

3.You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

If none of those applies, count backward from your ceremony date. You need to apply at least 72 hours ahead, and no more than 90 days ahead. Applying a week or two before the ceremony leaves you room on both sides.

Confirm these details before you go

Some practical details we do not have, and we would rather tell you so than guess. Before you make the trip, contact the Fort Bend County clerk and confirm:

•The street address of the office you plan to visit, and whether it is the main location or a branch

•Current hours

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in

•Which forms of payment are accepted

•The exact fee for a marriage license

•Exactly which photo ID the office accepts

•How to submit your Twogether in Texas certificate, if you have one

Calling or checking the county clerk's official page takes a few minutes and can save you a wasted trip. This matters most if you are working to a deadline.

A simple order of steps

1.Pick your ceremony date.

2.Decide whether you will take the Twogether in Texas course, since it affects both the fee and the wait.

3.Confirm the office details above with the county clerk.

4.Go together, with photo ID, and apply.

5.Note your issue date. The 72-hour wait starts then, unless waived, and the license expires 90 days later.

Once you have the license in hand and the dates line up, the paperwork part is done.
