How to Get a Marriage License in Brownsville (Cameron County, TX)

How to get a marriage license in Cameron County, Texas: who issues it, what to bring, the 72-hour wait, how long it lasts, and what to confirm with the clerk.

If you searched for a Brownsville marriage license, the first thing to know is that no city issues them. In Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk. Brownsville is the county seat of Cameron County, so the county clerk's office is where most couples in Brownsville, Harlingen and the rest of the county start.

Who issues the license

The county clerk issues marriage licenses, not the city of Brownsville or the city of Harlingen. Being the county seat does not change that. Brownsville is where the county government is based, but the license itself is a county document.

You are not limited to the county you live in. You can apply at any county clerk in Texas, the license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. If one of you lives elsewhere, or you plan to marry in another part of the state, you can still apply in Cameron County and use the license wherever your ceremony takes place in Texas.

What to bring and who has to be there

Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you needs a valid photo ID. Plan for both of you to be present at the same time rather than sending one person ahead to start the paperwork.

This guide cannot tell you exactly which other documents the office may ask for or how the application is handled. Ask when you contact the clerk, so you do not make the trip and get turned away over a missing item.

The fee and the 72-hour wait

Each county sets its own fee. Across Texas it is typically about $70 to $85. We do not have the exact current fee for Cameron County, so confirm it with the clerk before you go.

After the license is issued, there is a 72-hour waiting period before your ceremony can happen. That matters if your date is close, because applying the week of your wedding may not leave enough time.

There are three ways around the wait:

•If either of you is on active-duty military service, the wait is waived.

•A judge can give you a written waiver.

•You can complete a Twogether in Texas premarital education course and bring the certificate. The certificate waives the 72-hour wait and removes up to $60 of the fee.

If you take the course, bring the certificate with you when you apply. The reduced fee and the waived wait depend on it.

How long the license lasts

Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. You need to hold your ceremony inside that window. If you apply too early and your date falls after the 90 days, the license will have expired and you would have to start over.

A workable timeline is to apply a few weeks before the wedding. That is comfortably past the 72-hour wait, if it applies to you, and well inside the 90 days.

What to confirm with the county clerk before you go

We do not have the clerk's street address, phone number, office hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods or the exact fee, and we are not going to guess at them. Offices change these details, and a wrong guess costs you a trip.

Before you go, contact the Cameron County Clerk and ask:

•Where to go to apply, and what hours the office is open.

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in.

•The exact fee, and how they accept payment.

•Which documents beyond photo ID you should bring.

•How they handle a Twogether in Texas certificate, if you have one.

Once you have those answers, the process is simple. Both of you show up with ID, pay the fee, and leave with a license you can use anywhere in Texas for the next 90 days.
