Who issues the license
In Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk, not from a city office. If you live in Chambers County and want to marry here, the Chambers County Clerk is the office you will deal with.
You are not limited to your home county, though. Any county clerk in Texas can issue your license, and the license is valid statewide. There is also no residency requirement. You can apply in Chambers County even if you live somewhere else, and you can apply elsewhere and still marry in Chambers County.
What you both need to do
Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you should bring valid photo ID. Plan the trip around both of your schedules, because one partner generally cannot handle it alone.
Before you go, contact the Chambers County Clerk's office directly to confirm the details we cannot give you here: the office's address, phone number and hours, whether you need an appointment or can walk in, which payment methods it accepts, and the exact fee. Those details can change, and the clerk's office is the only reliable source for them.
What it costs
Fees are set by each county, and they typically run about $70 to $85. Ask the Chambers County Clerk for the exact amount and the accepted ways to pay so you are not caught off guard at the counter.
There is a way to lower the cost. A certificate from the Twogether in Texas premarital education course removes up to $60 of the fee. If you are planning ahead and have the time, taking the course can make the license noticeably cheaper.
The 72-hour waiting period
Texas requires 72 hours between the moment your license is issued and your ceremony. If you pick up the license on a Monday afternoon, you cannot marry until the same time on Thursday.
This is the detail that trips up couples with a tight timeline, so count the hours before you set your date. There are three ways the wait is waived:
•One of you is on active-duty military service.
•You have a judge's written waiver.
•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.
The course certificate does double duty: it cuts the fee and removes the wait. If you want to apply and marry within the same few days, that is the route to look into first.
How long the license lasts
Your license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. That gives you a generous window, but it is not unlimited. Once the 90 days pass, the license expires, and you would need to apply again and pay the fee again.
Work backward from your ceremony date when you decide when to apply. You want to be past the 72-hour wait, unless you qualify for a waiver, and still well inside the 90-day window. Applying a few weeks ahead usually leaves comfortable room on both sides.
A quick checklist before you go
•Call the Chambers County Clerk to confirm the address, hours, appointment policy, payment methods and exact fee.
•Make sure both of you can be there in person.
•Each of you should bring valid photo ID.
•Decide whether you will take the Twogether in Texas course, since it affects both the fee and the waiting period.
•Count 72 hours from pickup to your ceremony, and keep the 90-day limit in mind.
Once you have the license in hand and the waiting period is behind you, you are free to hold your ceremony anywhere in Texas within the 90 days.
