How to Get a Marriage License in Midland County, TX: Courthouse Guide

How to get a marriage license in Midland County, Texas: where to apply, who must appear, the fee, the 72-hour wait, and how long your license stays valid.

Start with the county clerk

In Texas, marriage licenses are issued by the county clerk, not by a city. If you live in Midland, the office you want is the Midland County clerk. Midland is the county seat of Midland County.

You are not limited to the county where you live. A Texas license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. You can apply with any county clerk in Texas and use the license anywhere in the state. Many couples apply in Midland County because they live there or plan to marry there, but that is a convenience, not a rule.

What to bring and who has to show up

Both of you normally need to appear in person at the clerk's office, and each of you needs valid photo ID. Plan your schedule so you can go together.

This guide does not list the clerk's street address, phone number, office hours, appointment policy or accepted payment methods, because those details need to come from the office itself. Before you go, contact the Midland County clerk and confirm:

•The office address and the hours it is open to the public

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in

•Which forms of payment it accepts

•The exact fee

•Any other paperwork or identification details it asks for

A short call or check of the clerk's own website can save you a wasted trip.

What it costs

Each county sets its own fee. Marriage license fees in Texas typically run about $70 to $85. Ask the Midland County clerk for the exact amount and how they accept payment so you arrive prepared.

There is one way to lower the cost. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you complete the course before you apply, bring the certificate with you.

The 72-hour waiting period

Texas requires 72 hours between the moment your license is issued and your ceremony. You cannot get a license and marry the same afternoon. Count the days backward from your wedding date and make sure you apply early enough.

The wait can be waived in three situations:

•Either of you is on active-duty military

•You have a judge's written waiver

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate

The premarital course certificate does double duty: it reduces the fee and waives the waiting period. If you are short on time before your date, that is worth knowing. If you are relying on a military or judge's waiver, ask the clerk what documentation to bring.

Timing your license

Your license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. That gives you a real window, but not an open-ended one. If the 90 days pass without a ceremony, the license expires, and you would need to apply again.

A simple way to plan it:

1.Pick your ceremony date.

2.Decide whether you will use a waiver or the premarital course certificate. Without one, apply at least 72 hours before the ceremony.

3.Apply no more than 90 days before the ceremony, so the license is still valid when you marry.

4.Confirm the office details and the exact fee with the Midland County clerk before you go.

5.Go together, with your photo IDs, and bring any certificate or waiver paperwork that applies to you.

If you stay inside that window, getting the license is a short errand, and the clerk's office can answer any question about its own procedures.
