How to Get a Marriage License in Amarillo (Potter County, TX)

How to get a Potter County, Texas marriage license in Amarillo: who issues it, who must show up, the 72-hour wait, how long it lasts, and what to confirm.

Start with the county clerk

In Texas, marriage licenses are issued by the county clerk. A city does not issue them. Amarillo is the county seat of Potter County, so when you search for an Amarillo marriage license, the office you want is the Potter County Clerk.

You are not required to apply in Potter County. Any county clerk in Texas can issue your license. The license is valid statewide, and Texas has no residency requirement. If you live in another Texas county, or you plan to marry in Amarillo but live elsewhere, you can choose whichever clerk's office is most convenient for you.

Both of you need to show up

Both applicants normally appear in person at the clerk's office, and each of you should bring valid photo ID. Plan the trip so you are both there at the same time. If one of you can't make it, call the clerk before you go and ask what your options are, rather than assuming.

What the license costs

Each county sets its own fee, and it is typically about $70 to $85. We don't know Potter County's exact fee, so ask the clerk's office for the current amount before you go.

There is one way to lower the cost. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you are willing to complete the course first, it can make a real difference. Bring the certificate with you when you apply, and ask the clerk how they want to receive it.

The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window

Texas requires 72 hours between the day your license is issued and your ceremony. You cannot get a license in the morning and marry that afternoon unless one of the exceptions applies. The wait is waived in three situations:

•Either of you is on active-duty military.

•You have a judge's written waiver.

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

The license is also not open-ended. It is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. Count forward from the day you pick it up. Your ceremony needs to happen after the 72-hour wait, unless you qualify for a waiver, and before the 90 days run out. If you are planning a wedding months away, it makes sense to wait to apply so the license doesn't expire before your date.

Confirm these details before you go

We don't have reliable information on the specifics of the Potter County Clerk's office, and we would rather tell you that than guess. Before you make the trip, contact the clerk's office and confirm:

•The office's street address and which entrance to use.

•A phone number you can call with questions.

•Business hours, including any lunch closures or holiday schedules.

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in.

•Which payment methods they accept, so you don't arrive with the wrong one.

•The exact fee for a marriage license.

•Exactly which forms of photo ID they accept.

A short call can save you a second trip, especially since both of you need to be there.

A simple order of steps

1.Decide whether you want to take the Twogether in Texas course. It can lower the fee and remove the 72-hour wait.

2.Contact the Potter County Clerk and confirm the details above.

3.Go together with valid photo ID, and bring your course certificate if you have one.

4.Pay the fee and collect your license.

5.Hold your ceremony after the waiting period, unless you qualify for a waiver, and within 90 days of issuance.

That is the whole process in outline. The clerk's office can answer anything specific to your situation.
