If you searched for a Corpus Christi marriage license, the short version is that the license comes from the Nueces County clerk, not from the city. Corpus Christi is the county seat of Nueces County, which is why its name is the one most couples type into a search box. This guide covers the parts of the process that are the same for every Texas couple, then lists what you should confirm with the clerk before you go.
Who issues the license
In Texas, marriage licenses are issued at the county level. A city office does not issue them, so there is no need to look for a Corpus Christi city department. The office you want is the county clerk. For Nueces County, that means the Nueces County clerk.
You can apply at any Texas county clerk
A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. You can apply with any county clerk in Texas, not only the one in the county where you live or where you plan to marry.
If Nueces County is the most convenient office for both of you, use it. If another county is easier to reach, you can apply there and still use the license for a ceremony anywhere in the state.
Who needs to be there and what to bring
Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you needs valid photo ID. Plan to go together, on the same day, with your IDs in hand.
This guide does not list any other paperwork, because the clerk's office is the right source for what else it asks for. A quick check before you go is better than a second trip.
The fee and the 72-hour wait
Each county sets its own fee. Across Texas it is typically about $70 to $85. We do not have the exact Nueces County figure, so ask the clerk before you go.
There is a 72-hour waiting period between the day the license is issued and the day of your ceremony. If the license is issued on a Monday morning, the earliest you can marry is Thursday morning.
The wait is waived in three situations:
•One of you is on active-duty military status.
•You have a judge's written waiver.
•You have a certificate from the Twogether in Texas premarital education course.
That certificate does a second job as well. It removes up to $60 of the license fee. If you have time before applying, it can save you both money and the wait.
How long the license lasts and what to confirm first
The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. Plan your ceremony so it falls inside that window, and remember the 72-hour wait counts from the same issue date.
Before you make the trip, contact the Nueces County clerk and confirm the details we cannot give you here:
•The office's street address and the right location for marriage licenses
•A phone number to call with questions
•Opening hours, including any days it is closed
•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in
•Which forms of payment are accepted
•The exact license fee
Write the answers down and bring them with you. Offices change their hours and policies, so a short call or a check of the clerk's official page on the day before you go is worth the few minutes.
Once you have the license in hand, the main things left to track are the two dates that matter: the earliest day you can marry, three days after issuance unless you qualify for a waiver, and the last day the license is valid, 90 days after issuance.
