How to Get a Marriage License in Sherman (Grayson County, TX)

Getting a marriage license in Sherman, Texas: where to apply in Grayson County, what to bring, the 72-hour wait, how long the license lasts, and what to check.

Who issues the license

In Texas, marriage licenses are issued by the county clerk, not by a city. Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County, so if you searched for a Sherman marriage license, the Grayson County Clerk is the office you want. The same goes if you live in Denison or anywhere else in the county. Denison has no separate license office of its own.

Where you can apply

You do not have to apply in Grayson County. A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and any county clerk in Texas can issue one. There is also no residency requirement, so you do not need to live in the county where you apply.

That gives you some flexibility. If you live in Denison but work somewhere else, or you are planning a ceremony in another part of Texas, you can apply wherever is easiest for the two of you. If Grayson County is convenient, apply there.

What to bring and who has to show up

Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you should bring valid photo ID. Before you go, ask the clerk's office whether it needs anything beyond that for your situation, such as paperwork connected to a previous marriage. Do not assume the answer is no.

The clerk's office is the only reliable source for the practical details. We have not confirmed the following for the Grayson County office, so check them before you make the trip:

•The office's address and phone number

•Its opening hours

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in

•Which payment methods it accepts

•The exact fee

A short call or a look at the county's own website before you go can save you a wasted trip.

What it costs

Each county sets its own fee, and it typically runs about $70 to $85. Confirm the exact amount with the clerk before you go.

There is one way to bring the cost down. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you are willing to complete the course, bring the certificate with you when you apply.

The 72-hour wait and how long the license lasts

Texas has a 72-hour waiting period between the day the license is issued and your ceremony. You cannot marry the same day you pick it up unless the wait is waived. It is waived in three cases:

•One of you is on active-duty military.

•You have a judge's written waiver.

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

So the certificate does two things at once: it lowers the fee and it removes the wait. If you are on a tight timeline, that matters.

Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. Count forward from the day you pick it up, not from the day you plan to marry. If the 90 days pass without a ceremony, the license expires. Pick a ceremony date well inside that window, and leave room in case plans change.

A simple checklist

1.Decide which county clerk you will use. Grayson County in Sherman is a fine choice, but it is not required.

2.Contact that office to confirm its address, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods and exact fee.

3.Decide whether you will take the Twogether in Texas course. If so, finish it before you apply and bring the certificate.

4.Make sure you both have valid photo ID and can go in person together.

5.Work out your ceremony date. It needs to be at least 72 hours after issuance, unless the wait is waived, and no later than 90 days after.

If you plan these steps in this order, the visit to the clerk is usually quick and straightforward.
