Who issues a marriage license in Round Rock
Round Rock is the largest city in Williamson County, but the city does not issue marriage licenses. Licenses are issued at the county level by a county clerk. In Williamson County, the county seat is Georgetown, so that is the natural place to start looking for the clerk's office.
You are not limited to Williamson County. A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and you can apply at any county clerk in Texas. There is no residency requirement, so you do not need to live in the county where you apply. If you live in Round Rock, Cedar Park or Leander, you can still choose whichever clerk's office is easiest for the two of you to reach.
What you need to bring
Both of you normally have to appear in person, and each of you needs a valid photo ID. Plan your schedules so you can go together. If one of you cannot be there, ask the clerk's office before the trip what, if anything, can be done. Do not assume there is a workaround.
Beyond photo ID, the clerk may ask for other documents or information. We do not have that list, so check the clerk's requirements ahead of time rather than finding out at the counter.
What it costs
Each county sets its own fee. Across Texas, fees typically run about $70 to $85. We do not know the exact Williamson County fee, so confirm it with the clerk before you go.
You can lower the cost with a Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate. The certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you are thinking about taking the course, finish it before you apply and bring the certificate with you.
The 72-hour wait and how long the license lasts
Texas has a 72-hour waiting period between the day the license is issued and the day of your ceremony. You cannot marry during that window. The wait is waived in three situations:
•One of you is on active-duty military.
•You have a judge's written waiver.
•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.
Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. Your ceremony has to happen inside that window, so do not pick up the license too early. If you are planning a date months away, count forward from the day you expect to apply. Also count the 72 hours, unless you qualify for a waiver.
A simple way to plan: choose your ceremony date first. Then work backward. Your application day should fall at least 72 hours before the ceremony (unless waived) and no more than 90 days before it.
Confirm these details with the county clerk before you go
There are several practical details we cannot give you, and you should not rely on guesses from anyone else either. Contact the Williamson County clerk and ask:
•The street address of the office you plan to visit, and whether more than one location handles marriage licenses
•The days and hours the office is open
•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in
•The exact fee, and which payment methods are accepted
•Which documents beyond photo ID you should bring
•Whether the office will accept your Twogether in Texas certificate in the form you hold it
Write the answers down before you leave home. Fee and payment rules in particular can catch couples off guard, and a wasted trip is easy to avoid with one call or a visit to the clerk's official page.
Once you have the license in hand, check that the names and details on it are correct. Then keep it somewhere safe until your ceremony, and keep an eye on the 90-day clock.
