If you searched for a Bryan marriage license, the first thing to know is that no city issues them. In Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk. Bryan is the county seat of Brazos County, and College Station is the other city in the county. Whether you live in Bryan or College Station, you deal with the same office: the Brazos County Clerk.
Who Issues the License and Where You Can Apply
The county clerk issues the license. You are not limited to the county where you live. You can apply at any county clerk's office in Texas, and the license is valid statewide. There is also no residency requirement, so you don't need to live in Brazos County to apply there.
If you want to apply in Brazos County, that is fine. If another county is more convenient for you, that works too.
What to Bring and Who Has to Show Up
Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you should bring valid photo ID. Plan the trip around that. One person can't usually handle it alone while the other is at work.
Before you go, ask the clerk's office exactly what else to bring. Requirements can vary in the details, and a quick check beforehand can save you a second trip.
What the License Costs
Each county sets its own fee. Fees typically run about $70 to $85. We can't tell you Brazos County's exact fee, so ask the clerk's office when you confirm the other details.
You may be able to lower the cost. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you are willing to take the course first, it can make a real difference. It also has a second benefit, covered in the next section.
The 72-Hour Wait and the 90-Day Window
Two timing rules apply, and couples often mix them up.
•The 72-hour waiting period. There must be 72 hours between the moment the license is issued and your ceremony. You can't pick up the license and marry the same afternoon in the usual case.
•The 90-day validity window. Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. If the ceremony hasn't happened by then, the license expires.
The waiting period is waived in three situations:
1.One of you is on active-duty military.
2.You have a judge's written waiver.
3.You have a certificate from a Twogether in Texas premarital course.
If your date is close, count the 72 hours from when you expect to be issued the license. Then check that your ceremony falls inside the 90 days. Together, those two rules give you a window to work within. Don't apply too early, or the license may expire before your date. Don't apply too late either, or you may have to postpone.
What to Confirm With the County Clerk Before You Go
This guide doesn't cover everything about the Brazos County Clerk's office. Before you make the trip, contact the office directly and confirm:
•The office's location and its hours.
•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in.
•The exact fee for the license.
•Which payment methods the office accepts.
•Any additional documents you should bring besides your photo IDs.
Settling these points ahead of time keeps the visit short. It also means you won't arrive and find out the office doesn't take the kind of payment you brought.
A simple plan works for most couples. Decide on your ceremony date. Work backward to leave at least 72 hours after issuance, unless you qualify for a waiver. Then make sure the license will still be valid, within 90 days, on the day you marry. After that, call the clerk, confirm the details, and go in together with your IDs.
