How to Get a Marriage License in Conroe (Montgomery County, TX)

Getting a Conroe marriage license? Learn who issues it, what to bring, the 72-hour wait, how long it lasts, and what to confirm with the county clerk first.

Who issues a marriage license in Conroe

In Texas, marriage licenses are issued by the county clerk, not by a city. Conroe is the county seat of Montgomery County, so a search for a "Conroe marriage license" leads to the Montgomery County clerk. That office serves the whole county, including The Woodlands.

The license comes from the county, so no city office will issue it to you. Whichever county you apply in, the clerk is the office you need.

Where you can apply

You do not have to live in Montgomery County. Any county clerk in Texas can issue your license, and the license is valid statewide. Texas has no residency requirement for it. If you live in The Woodlands, work in another county, and plan to marry somewhere else in Texas, you can use whichever clerk's office suits you best.

Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you should bring valid photo ID. Do not plan on one of you picking up the license alone.

What it costs and how to lower it

Each county sets its own fee. It is typically about $70 to $85, but we cannot tell you the exact Montgomery County amount. Ask the clerk before you go.

There is one way to bring the cost down. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. It also waives the 72-hour wait, which is covered below. If you want that discount, finish the course first and bring the certificate with you when you apply.

The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window

Texas requires 72 hours between the moment the license is issued and your ceremony. If you pick up the license on a Monday morning, the earliest you can marry is that Thursday morning. Count the hours, not just the days.

The wait is waived in three situations:

•One of you is on active-duty military status.

•You have a judge's written waiver.

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

If you rely on one of these, bring the paperwork with you.

The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. Choose your pickup date so the ceremony lands inside that window and after the 72 hours, unless you qualify for a waiver. Getting the license too early can leave you with a window that closes before your date.

Before you go, confirm these with the clerk

We do not have verified details on the Montgomery County clerk's office logistics, and we would rather not send you to the wrong door. Before you make the trip, contact the county clerk and ask:

•The office address and which location handles marriage licenses.

•Current opening hours.

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in.

•Which payment methods are accepted.

•The exact fee.

•Whether they want anything beyond valid photo ID from each of you.

A short call or a visit to the county clerk's official page should answer all of this. Write down what you learn so you both arrive with the same information.

Here is the short version. Pick your ceremony date. Decide whether you will use the Twogether course or a waiver to skip the wait. Confirm the details with the county clerk. Then go in together, with photo ID, and keep the 90-day clock in mind.
