How to Get a Marriage License in Randall County, TX: Courthouse Guide

How to get a marriage license in Randall County, Texas: who issues it, who must appear, the fee range, the 72-hour wait, and how long the license stays valid.

Who issues the license

In Randall County, as everywhere in Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk. A city does not issue them. When you search for where to apply, look for the Randall County Clerk, not a city office.

You also have more choices than you might expect. A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. You can apply with any county clerk in Texas and still use the license for a ceremony in Randall County, or anywhere else in the state. If another county's office is easier to reach, you can apply there.

What you need to bring

Both of you normally need to appear in person at the clerk's office, and each of you needs valid photo ID. Plan to go together on the same day. If one of you cannot attend, ask the clerk before you go whether anything can be done about that. Don't assume it can.

The clerk's office may ask for other things we haven't listed here. Call or check the county clerk's official channels before you go, so you aren't turned away over a missing item.

What it costs

Each county sets its own fee. Across Texas, a marriage license typically runs about $70 to $85. We don't have the exact Randall County figure, so confirm it with the clerk.

One way to bring the cost down is a Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate. Completing that course removes up to $60 of the fee. If you plan to take it, finish the course and have the certificate in hand before you apply.

We also can't tell you which payment methods the office accepts. Ask before you go, so you don't arrive with a form of payment they won't take.

The 72-hour waiting period

Texas requires 72 hours between the day the license is issued and the ceremony. You can't apply in the morning and marry that afternoon. Count three full days from issuance when you set your ceremony date.

The wait is waived in three situations:

•Either of you is on active-duty military.

•You have a judge's written waiver.

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

If the wait is a problem for your schedule, the course certificate is the most practical route for most couples. It shortens the wait and lowers the fee. A judge's waiver has to be in writing, so don't count on getting one at the last minute.

How long the license lasts

The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. Your ceremony has to happen inside that window, and after the 72-hour wait unless you qualify for a waiver. If you run past 90 days, the license expires and you would need to apply again.

A simple way to plan is to pick your ceremony date first. Then work backward. Apply at least three days ahead, or sooner if you want some breathing room. Don't apply so early that you risk the 90 days running out.

Confirm these details before you go

We don't know the Randall County Clerk's street address, phone number, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods or exact fee. Don't rely on a guess, including ours. Before you make the trip, contact the county clerk directly and confirm:

•Where to go and when the office is open

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in

•The exact fee and how you can pay

•Which forms of photo ID they accept

•Anything else they require from both of you

A few minutes of checking can save you a second visit, especially since you both have to be there.
