Who issues the license
In Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk. They do not come from a city, so a city hall or a city clerk is not where you start. For Anderson County, your license comes from a county clerk's office.
You are not limited to Anderson County. Any county clerk in Texas can issue your license, and the license is valid statewide. There is also no residency requirement. If one of you lives in Anderson County and the other lives across the state, you can still apply here. You can also apply in another county and marry in Anderson County.
What to bring and who has to be there
Both of you normally need to appear in person. Each of you should bring valid photo ID. Check that neither ID has expired before you go, because that is the easiest way to lose a trip.
This guide does not cover every document the clerk may ask for. Before you go, ask the Anderson County clerk what each of you should bring beyond your photo ID. That is faster than guessing and being turned away.
What it costs
Each county sets its own fee. Across Texas it is typically about $70 to $85. We do not have Anderson County's exact fee, so confirm it with the clerk's office before you go.
You can lower the cost with a Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate. The certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you plan to take the course, finish it and have your certificate in hand before you apply.
Also ask the clerk which payment methods the office accepts. We do not know them, and you do not want to find out at the counter.
The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window
Two timing rules matter, and they pull in opposite directions.
•The waiting period. Texas requires 72 hours between the moment the license is issued and the ceremony. You cannot pick up a license in the morning and marry that afternoon.
•The expiration. The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. If the ceremony does not happen inside that window, the license expires.
Put together, your ceremony date should fall after the 72 hours have passed and before day 90. Count from the issue date, not from the day you first talked to the clerk.
The 72-hour wait is waived in three situations:
1.Either of you is on active-duty military.
2.You have a judge's written waiver.
3.You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.
The course certificate does double duty, because it reduces the fee and also waives the wait. If your timeline is tight, it is the option most couples can plan for ahead of time.
Confirm these details before you go
We do not know the Anderson County clerk's street address, phone number, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods, or exact fee. Do not rely on this guide for any of them. Contact the county clerk's office and ask:
•Where the office is, and when it is open for marriage licenses.
•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in.
•The exact fee, and which payment methods are accepted.
•Whether anything beyond valid photo ID is required from each of you.
•How the office handles a Twogether in Texas certificate or a military waiver, if either applies to you.
When you have those answers, you are ready. Plan your visit so you both can attend in person. Choose a ceremony date that lands after the 72-hour wait, unless it is waived for you, and well inside the 90 days.
