Who issues the license
In Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk, not from a city office. If you want a Kendall County license, the Kendall County clerk is the office you are looking for. City hall will not issue one.
You also do not have to apply in the county where you plan to marry. A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. You can apply with the Kendall County clerk or with any other county clerk in Texas, and the license will still work wherever in the state you hold your ceremony.
What to bring and who has to be there
Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you needs valid photo ID. Plan your schedules so you can go together. If one of you cannot be there, ask the clerk's office before you make the trip, because the normal expectation is that you both show up.
What it costs
Each county sets its own fee. Across Texas, the fee is typically about $70 to $85. We cannot tell you the exact amount Kendall County charges, so confirm it with the clerk before you go.
You can lower the cost. A certificate from a Twogether in Texas premarital education course removes up to $60 of the fee. Finish the course and get your certificate before you visit the clerk, and bring it with you.
The 72-hour wait
Texas requires 72 hours between the moment the license is issued and your ceremony. That means you cannot get a license in the morning and marry that afternoon unless you qualify for an exception. The wait is waived in three situations:
•One of you is on active-duty military status.
•You have a judge's written waiver.
•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.
The course certificate does two things at once. It reduces the fee and it removes the waiting period, so it is worth a look if your date is close or you want to spend less. If you think you qualify for another exception, ask the clerk what paperwork they will want to see.
How long the license lasts, and what to confirm first
Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Count forward from that date and make sure your ceremony falls inside the window. Combine that with the 72-hour wait, and your ceremony needs to land after the waiting period ends and before day 90. If you apply too early and your date slips past 90 days, you would have to get a new license.
Before you go, contact the Kendall County clerk's office and confirm the details we cannot give you:
•The office's street address and which entrance to use
•Its phone number and its opening hours
•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in
•Which forms of payment it accepts
•The exact fee for a marriage license
A short call can save you a wasted trip, especially since both of you need to be there in person.
A simple order of steps: decide whether you want to take the premarital course, confirm the details with the clerk, go together with your photo IDs, and make sure your ceremony date fits between the end of the 72-hour wait and the 90th day.
