How to Get a Marriage License in Plano (Collin County, TX)

Getting a Plano marriage license? Collin County clerk issues it, no residency needed, 72-hour wait, valid 90 days. Here is what both of you should know first.

Who issues a Plano marriage license

Plano does not issue marriage licenses. In Texas, licenses are issued at the county level by the county clerk, not by a city. Plano is the largest city in Collin County, so the Collin County clerk is the office to start with if you live there. The county seat is McKinney, which is a separate city from Plano. Because of that, check with the clerk about which location handles marriage licenses before you go anywhere.

The same applies to the other cities in the county, such as Frisco and Allen. No city office will hand you a license.

You are not limited to Collin County

A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. You can apply with any county clerk in Texas, and you can then marry anywhere in the state. If another county is closer to your work or easier to reach, you can use it. If you are staying in Collin County, that works just as well.

Who needs to show up and what to bring

Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you needs valid photo ID. Plan on going together, on a day when you are both free.

The clerk may ask for more than the basics, and we don't want to guess at it. Ask when you call which forms of ID are accepted and whether you need anything else. That one question can save you a second trip.

What the license costs, and how to pay less

Each county sets its own fee. Fees are typically about $70 to $85, but we can't tell you Collin County's exact amount. Ask the clerk for the current figure. Also ask which payment methods they accept, so you don't arrive with the wrong one.

There is one way to lower the cost. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. It also waives the 72-hour wait, which is covered in the next section. If you plan to take the course, finish it before you apply and bring the certificate. Ask the clerk how they want to receive it.

The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window

Two timing rules shape when you can marry.

The wait. There are 72 hours between the moment the license is issued and your ceremony. You cannot get the license and marry the same afternoon unless you qualify for a waiver. The wait is waived in three cases:

•One of you is on active-duty military.

•You have a judge's written waiver.

•You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

The window. The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. Plan your ceremony to land after the wait ends and before the 90 days run out. If your date is months away, wait to apply so the license doesn't expire before you use it. If your date is close, apply early enough that the 72 hours have passed, unless you qualify for a waiver.

Questions to ask the county clerk before you go

We don't have the office's street address, phone number, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods or exact fee. Confirm all of them with the Collin County clerk before you go. A short call or a visit to the clerk's official website should cover this list:

•Which location issues marriage licenses, and what are its hours?

•Do you need an appointment, or can you walk in?

•What is the exact fee, and which payment methods are accepted?

•Which forms of photo ID are accepted?

•If you have a Twogether in Texas certificate, how should you present it?

•Is there anything else you should bring?

Have the answers in hand, bring your photo IDs, and go together. You can get the license in one visit.
