How to Get a Marriage License in McAllen (Hidalgo County, TX)

How to get a marriage license in Hidalgo County, TX: where to apply, who must appear, the fee range, the 72-hour wait, and how long your license is valid.

Where the license comes from

A marriage license in Hidalgo County is issued by the county clerk, not by the City of McAllen. McAllen is the largest city in the county, and the county seat is Edinburg, but Texas licenses are handled at the county level. Couples in Mission, Pharr and the rest of the county go through the same process.

You also have more freedom than the search term suggests. There is no residency requirement, and you may apply at any county clerk in Texas. The license is valid statewide. If you live in Hidalgo County but plan to marry in another part of Texas, or the other way around, the license still works.

Who has to be there

Both of you normally appear in person with valid photo ID. Plan to go together, on the same day, and make sure each of you has your ID in hand before you leave home. If one of you has an ID that is expired or close to it, sort that out first.

Because requirements can be applied differently from one office to the next, ask the clerk's office exactly which forms of ID they accept before you make the trip.

What it costs

Each county sets its own fee, and licenses typically run about $70 to $85. We do not know the exact amount Hidalgo County charges today, so confirm it with the clerk before you go.

There is one way to bring the cost down. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate removes up to $60 of the fee. If you are willing to complete the course before you apply, it can make a real difference, and it also takes care of the waiting period described below.

The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window

Texas requires 72 hours between the day the license is issued and the ceremony. If you are issued a license on a Monday morning, the earliest you can marry is Thursday morning. Do not schedule your ceremony for the same weekend you plan to apply unless you have a way around the wait.

The 72 hours is waived in three situations:

•One of you is on active-duty military.

•You have a judge's written waiver.

•You hold a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.

Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. That gives you a window, not an open-ended license. If your ceremony is far off, wait to apply so the license does not expire before the wedding day.

Confirm these before you go

We do not have verified details for the Hidalgo County clerk's office, so check each of the following directly with them rather than relying on a guess from a website or a friend:

•The street address of the location where marriage licenses are issued

•The phone number to call with questions

•Opening hours, including any lunch closures

•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in

•Which payment methods are accepted

•The exact fee

•Which forms of photo ID are accepted

A short call or a check of the clerk's own official page will answer all of these, and it can save you a wasted trip. Once you have those answers, the rest is simple: both of you show up with ID, pay the fee, count out your 72 hours (or skip them with a qualifying waiver or certificate), and hold the ceremony within 90 days.
