Start with the county clerk, not the city
If you searched for a Beaumont marriage license, the first thing to know is that no city issues one. In Texas, marriage licenses come from the county clerk. Beaumont is the county seat of Jefferson County, so it is the natural place to look. Port Arthur and the other towns in the county don't issue licenses of their own. Whichever city you live in, the county clerk is the office you deal with.
You are not limited to Jefferson County
A Texas marriage license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. You can apply at any county clerk in Texas, and you do not have to live in Jefferson County to get your license there. If one of you lives or works in another county, you can apply there instead and still marry in Beaumont, Port Arthur, or anywhere else in the state.
Both of you normally need to appear in person with valid photo ID. Plan on going together rather than sending one person ahead.
What it costs
Each county sets its own fee, and it is typically about $70 to $85. We can't tell you Jefferson County's exact amount, so ask the clerk's office before you go.
You can lower the cost with a Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate. It removes up to $60 of the fee. It also waives the 72-hour wait, which is covered below. If you have time to finish the course before you apply, it can help on both counts.
The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window
Texas requires 72 hours between the day the license is issued and your ceremony. Plan your timeline around that. If you want to marry on a Saturday, you need the license in hand by the Wednesday before.
The wait is waived in three situations:
•One of you is on active-duty military status.
•You have a judge's written waiver.
•You have a certificate from the Twogether in Texas premarital course.
The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. If your ceremony doesn't happen within that window, the license expires and you would need to apply again. Don't pick up a license too early, and don't wait so long that you cut into the 72 hours.
Confirm these details before you go
We don't have the Jefferson County clerk's street address, phone number, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods or exact fee, and we won't guess at them. Offices change these details, and showing up with the wrong assumption can cost you a trip. Contact the county clerk directly and ask:
•Where the office that issues marriage licenses is located, and what hours it is open.
•Whether you need an appointment or can walk in.
•What the fee is right now.
•Which forms of payment they accept.
•Which photo IDs they accept, and whether you need to bring anything else.
If you are using a Twogether in Texas certificate, ask how they want to see it. Bring the original or a copy, and ask which one they take.
Once you have the answers, pick a day that leaves at least 72 hours before your ceremony, unless you qualify for the waiver. Then go together with your photo IDs.
