Who issues the license
In Texas, marriage licenses are issued by the county clerk, not by a city. For Medina County, that means the county clerk's office. You are not limited to it, though. You can apply with any county clerk in Texas, the license is valid statewide, and there is no residency requirement. If another county's office is more convenient for the two of you, you can use it and still be married anywhere in the state.
What to bring and who has to go
Both of you normally need to appear in person, and each of you needs valid photo ID. Plan to go together, and bring your actual IDs rather than copies or photos on your phone. Before you leave home, ask the clerk's office whether you need anything beyond photo ID so you do not make a second trip.
What it costs
Each county sets its own fee, and the fee is typically about $70 to $85. We do not know Medina County's exact amount, so confirm it with the clerk before you go, and ask which forms of payment they accept so you arrive prepared.
There is one way to bring the cost down. If you complete a Twogether in Texas premarital education course and bring the certificate, it removes up to $60 of the fee. The same certificate also waives the 72-hour wait, which makes it worth considering if your timeline is tight.
The 72-hour wait and the 90-day window
Two clocks run once the license is issued.
•The 72-hour wait. You must let 72 hours pass between the moment the license is issued and your ceremony. Do not plan to apply the day before the wedding.
•The 90-day limit. The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. If the ceremony does not happen in that time, the license expires.
The waiting period can be skipped in three situations:
1.Either of you is on active-duty military service.
2.You have a judge's written waiver.
3.You have a Twogether in Texas premarital course certificate.
If none of those applies to you, count forward from the day you expect to pick up the license. The ceremony should fall after the 72 hours have passed and before the 90 days run out. Applying roughly a couple of weeks ahead gives you room for the wait without putting the expiration close.
Confirm these details before you go
We do not have verified information about this office's street address, phone number, hours, appointment policy, accepted payment methods, or exact fee. Do not rely on a guess for any of them. Contact the Medina County Clerk directly and ask:
•Where is the office, and what are the hours on the day you plan to go?
•Do you need an appointment, or can you walk in?
•What is the exact fee, and what payment methods are accepted?
•Is anything required besides valid photo ID for each of you?
•How should a premarital course certificate or a judge's waiver be presented, if you have one?
Write the answers down and keep them with your IDs. Once you have the license in hand, note the issue date right away. Everything else, from the earliest day you can marry to the last day the license is good, is counted from that date.
